Google starts testing ads in AI Mode for people who connect their Gmail and other apps

Google has confirmed it is testing ads in AI Mode for users who connect their Google apps through Personal Intelligence, reversing its March position that these answers would stay ad-free. Here is what that means for advertisers in India.

Key takeaways

  • Google is testing ads in AI Mode for users who connect apps such as Gmail through Personal Intelligence; in March it had said these answers would carry no ads.
  • Google says ads will not be based directly on Gmail or Google Photos content, and it has not named the countries in the test.
  • There is nothing to switch on: keep conversion tracking, ad assets, product feeds and landing pages in good shape.

What happened

Google told Search Engine Land on Friday, 16 October, that it is starting to test ads in AI Mode for people who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence. Search Engine Roundtable reported on 19 October that Google had also updated its Search help page on connected apps to cover ads.

This is a change of position. In March, Google said there were no ads for people who connected their apps to AI Mode, while adding that it expected ads to work the same way for them in future. That future has now started, as a test.

Ads in AI Mode itself are not new. What is new is ads appearing in the more personal version of AI Mode, where answers can draw on a user's own Google apps.

How it works and what data is used

Personal Intelligence is opt-in. A user aged 18 or over, on a personal Google account, chooses to connect content apps (currently Gmail and Google Calendar, plus Google Photos in some regions) so AI Mode can tailor its answers. India appears in the help page's list of supported countries, and Hindi in its list of languages.

According to Google's updated help page:

  • Ads will not be based directly on the user's Gmail inbox or Google Photos library, though information from connected apps may be used to make ads more relevant.
  • Advertisers get no access to a user's Gmail or Photos.
  • Google does not personalise ads on sensitive categories such as health or religion.
  • Users can disconnect their apps at any time.

Google told Search Engine Land that ads will stay relevant to "your query, the context of the response and your interests".

Who it affects

If you run Google Search ads, this is worth knowing about, but Google has not said which countries the test covers, which campaign types or ad formats can appear, or how much traffic is involved. Neither the reports nor the help page mention a new setting or report for advertisers. So treat it as a small test for now, not a new channel to budget for.

For Indian businesses, it is a signal of direction: AI answers are becoming more personal, and ads are being placed inside them.

What to do now

  1. Do not change budgets for this. There is nothing to switch on, and the size of the test is unknown.
  2. Keep the basics in order. Accurate conversion tracking, complete ad assets and, for shops, a clean product feed are what any AI-led placement has to work with.
  3. Make your landing pages answer real questions. A personalised answer is only useful to you if the click lands on a page that matches it. Our guide on getting recommended by AI search tools covers the basics.
  4. Watch your search terms report. Look for longer, conversational queries and check whether they turn into enquiries or sales.

Our take: what this means for Indian businesses

We would not change a client's campaigns this week because of this test. Google has given no market list, no format details and no reporting, so there is nothing to optimise for yet. What it does confirm is the direction: AI answers are getting more personal, and ads will sit inside them.

For Indian businesses that means the basics carry more weight: accurate conversion tracking, a clean product feed and landing pages that answer the questions buyers actually ask. Get those right and you are ready whenever this reaches your account.
